Uwe Römer

PD Dr. rer. nat. Uwe Römer,
born in 1959, has been a nature enthusiast since early childhood. As a youth, he dealt with specific questions concerning the protection and biology of native fishes, amphibians, and reptiles. While at high school, he specialized in ornithology and made an intensive commitment to nature conservation. During his time at Bielefeld-University his interest turned to neotropical fish, and he went on several trips to the Rio Negro region in the 1990’s, where he was one of the first able to reach the very inaccessible Rio Uaupés-region. His professional specialization brought about extensive consulting for planning agencies, and administrative bodies like the fisheries and wildlife service or the forest services. For several years he has been working as ichthyologist at a biological research and management station. At present he is lecturing in biogeography at Trier University, and acting as a teacher at a public school. He gained his PhD working on the ethology, ecology and reproductive biology of Neotropical Dwarf Cichlids of the genus Apistogramma. In the year 2006 he got his habilitation for complex evolutionary studies on Apistogramma-species at Trier University. Several taxonomic papers and species descriptions were another result of this work. Just like his latest book publication printed by Mergus Publishers is CICHLID ATLAS 2 - the second volume of his Natural History of South American Dwarf Cichlids -, the majority of his about 200 publications and numerous presentations in Europe and North America are illustrated with his own photographs from his extensive archives, which he again will open for the ACA-members at the convention in Atlanta.
